We are committed to reducing regulatory burdens on business where possible, in line with the Scottish Government’s approach to better regulation. This is reflected in our regulatory strategy which establishes how we will fulfil our statutory consumer protection and other regulatory functions to support a responsible and flourishing food and drink sector.
The Scottish Government has a well-established better regulation agenda that aims to eliminate obsolete and inefficient regulation, tackle inconsistencies in regulatory systems and enhance Scotland's competitiveness by championing the five principles of Better Regulation.
These are that regulation should be:
- proportionate
- consistent
- accountable
- transparent
- targeted
Scottish Regulators' Strategic Code of Practice
As a Scottish regulator FSS is required to have due regard to the Scottish Regulators’ Strategic Code of Practice in the way we operate. The Code was introduced in February 2015 under The Regulatory Reform (Scotland) Act 2014, and seeks to promote consistent, proportionate and effective regulation in Scotland.
The 2014 Act also places a statutory duty on Scottish regulators, including FSS, to contribute to sustainable economic growth where this does not conflict with primary statutory duties.
